Saint Patrick´s Day
According to the reading, Saint Patrick´s Day is the Ireland national holiday; it is a bank, religious, and public holiday. This celebration is represented by shamrocks, green and orange; which are the most common symbols for this holiday around the world. The writer explains that since the shamrock has three leaves, thousands of years ago, Saint Patrick (a religious leader), used it to teach the Irish people about the three parts of God. For this reason, today, many people wear a shamrock design on St. Patrick´s Day, as a call to bring good luck.
The writer says that nowadays, St. Patrick´s Day is celebrated in many countries, because Irish people have been emigrating from Ireland to other cities or countries around the world, like, The United States, where St Patrick´s Day is celebrated on March 17, as in Ireland, because, American people have adopted that day as yours. This means that North American people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, just for fun, but not an official holiday as in Ireland. Also the writer says that, nowadays, this serious and religious holiday from Ireland has been changed a little bit in America. Today people enjoy St. Patrick´s Day by wearing green color. If you do not wear at least one small green item, school children may pinch you. On this day, American people also enjoy going to a pub and drinking beer; they tell jokes and have a good time there. The writer says that “people who not come from Ireland pretend they are, too”.
In my opinion, not only Ireland culture has been changed. Along the years, there are many cultures that also have been changed, as a result the emigrating, but the most important thing is that each culture keeps its beliefs religions and customs.
